19/06/05 Harberton v Stoke Fleming for the Mills Shield

A hot and sunny day greeted the players for Harberton’s away trip to Stoke Fleming. The match had been eagerly awaited as it offered the Harberton team with their first opportunity of the season to defend the Mills Shield. Stoke Fleming skipper John Hardy won the toss and elected to bat on a hard and true wicket. The Stoke Fleming openers were Hardy and Black. It became clear from the off that Hardy was in venomous form. As early as the third over he flicked Wood over square-leg for six.The Harberton new-ball attack of Wood and Powell were unable to make a breakthrough so Cook was introduced into the attack. It was now that the runs really began to flow at an unacceptable pace. Cook was punished for bowling too short as Hardy flayed him for two pulled sixes. Hardy continued to hit out and brought up a fully deserved fifty. However, Cook had his revenge soon after as Hardy played outside a yorker to be bowled for 58. An excellent opening stand of 85 had been broken. Hardy was replaced by Lobb who instantly took a liking to any pace that was offered to him. Harberton skipper Ben Pyke introduced his slow-left armers into the attack. Bowling with flight, cunning and guile Pyke struck. Black had looked to be very secure in making 44 but he was tempted into a loose drive and Powell pouched the catch. A small collapse then followed. Pyke pinned Lobb (16) LBW with a beautifully dipping delivery, and then Cook bowled Chamberlain (9). When Hughes was run out for 2 the innings had subsided to 138 for 5 after 24 overs. It was principally through the efforts of Church that Stoke Fleming were then able to muster a very competitive score. In an innings that was full of powerful cuts and drives he proceded to hit 11 boundaries in a score of 62. In addition, useful contributions from Durrant (17) and Garland (12) enabled a very challenging total of 238 for 9 to be achieved. Pyke bowled well to take 3 for 39, but elsewhere there was little joy as Harberton baked under the powerful sun.The general consensus at tea was that Harberton could chase down the total if their best players got in and made the most of the flat pitch and lightning outfield.

Stoke Fleming got their tactics right by introducing the very slow spin of Bygrave at the start of the Harberton reply. He gave the batsmen absolutely no pace to work with. Bygrave struck early by removing David Ray. The ball turned back sharply between pad and pad as Ray (1) looked to drive – the classic off-spinners dismissal. Bygrave then accounted for Pyke (7), but this time the wicket owed much to fortune. A leg-side long hop brushed Pyke’s leg and managed to clip the stumps. Harberton’s hopes rested with their two big hitters – Mike McClement and Mike Powell. McClement struck Lobb for two powerful boundaries past point. However, he attempted the shot again and a top-edged looped to the fielder. He went for 16 and the innings was in trouble at 40 for 3. Proceedings went from bad to worse as Powell (16) was caught down the leg-side off Bygrave and Hawtin (2) chipped Helyer to Lobb. The score was now 47 for 5 and all realistic hope had gone. Jack Buckner enlivened Harberton’s spirits with a magnificent pull for six off Helyer. A stand of 25 with Bill Scott was ended when Buckner was caught and bowled by Chamberlain. Chris Tregelles entered the fray and hit a barn-storming 26, the top score of the innings. But the game was over as a contest. The tail failed to wag and the innings closed on 128 when Wood edged to Hardy.

Stoke Fleming can be proud of the way that they performed in this match. Their bowling was tighter than Harberton’s and they gave away nothing in the field. Harbeton’s glorious reign as Mills Shield holders is over, but they are keen for revenge when the sides play each other again at Stonehills on July 31.
