HARBERTON CRICKET CLUB - END OF SEASON NEWSLETTER

2009 will go down as a memorable season for Harberton Cricket Club both on and off the field. After a gloriously fine and dry September the season finished with a superb win against Shaldon when a supreme all round team effort eclipsed a score of 202 including an outstanding innings of 130 by Fulner. This performance reflected the spirit and fighting qualities displayed by the Harberton team throughout the season. With 18 wins, 1 draw and only 9 defeats, the weekend team can look back with pride on a successful season. The loss of the Mills Shield to Stoke Fleming was the only real disappointment. New players Mark Harvey and Steve Wilks have settled in well while several juniors played regularly making telling contributions to the senior cause.-Christian and Elliot Buckner, Matthew Culf, Sam Kay, Glynn Oakey, Ember Lagden, and Gabbie Clark all performed well.

The midweek team had a mixed season. Captain Rob Alexander had to balance results with the need to ensure all players are able to perform with bat and ball. Highlight of the season was the exciting tied match against Churston teachers. At junior level, the under 13 finished runners up and the under 15 team third in their respective leagues while the under 17 team performed well against very strong opposition in the A Division. Special congratulations and thanks must go to Alan Sheppard and Jack Buckner who gave up so much time to manage and coach the junior squads.

The strength of HCC is the support provided by members behind the scenes and off the field. The army of tea ladies co-ordinated by Isabelle Steer, the ground preparation and machinery maintenance team led by Bill Scott and Graham Clayton, our resident umpire and club secretary Bob Mucklow and the club committee have all contributed to the success of the club. Club President Alick Whittle has also done so much for the club over the past decade – he will be sorely missed,. We wish both Alick and Peggy our best wishes in their new home in Gloucestershire – do keep in touch.

Unfortunately bad weather brought about the cancellation of our proposed vice presidents day and the reserve day in September. Thus our valued VP’s were denied the opportunity of visiting us and indulging in one of the famous Harberton teas. Next season the VP’s day is scheduled for Sunday 25th July on the occasion of our local derby against Stoke Fleming. However we would wish to take this opportunity of saying a huge thank you to our VP’s for their continued support.

At the beginning of the year the club committee set itself 3 challenging targets.

All 3 targets have been achieved. Clubmark status was achieved in September. This will open doors to ground and coaching development funding – our next challenge!

We are weeks away from owning Stonehills – contracts are ready to be signed.

Many thanks must go to John and Jan Culf  who have generously organised folk concerts at the village hall and the Ariel Centre  in Totnes – profits going to the cricket club.

The future of Harberton Cricket Club looks rosy.

We are always looking to increase our membership. If you are interested in joining us please contact Barry Goldsmith on 01803 845251 or Bob Mucklow on 01803 832876 – we will be delighted to hear from you.
